IELTS General Training: dates and registration

For Canada, IRCC requires the IELTS General Training (not Academic). You book it with an official British Council or IDP centre, usually on computer.

Good to know: Indicative dates published by the official centres; always check with the centre before paying. THE BRIDGE WORLD does not organise these exams.

IELTS General Training: how to register

For Canada, IRCC requires the IELTS General Training (not Academic). You book it with an official British Council or IDP centre, usually on computer.

  1. Choose the place and the test

    Choose your centre and the "IELTS General Training" test: it is the one IRCC requires.

  2. Choose the date

    Choose the format (usually on computer), then an available date and time.

  3. Fill in the application

    Fill in the online form and upload a clear colour copy of your passport (steps may vary by country).

  4. Pay and get the confirmation

    Pay the test fee; you then receive a confirmation by e-mail or phone.

On test day, bring the same ID you used to book (passport or national ID card).

Advised lead time

Our advice: choose your session 2 to 3 months before the date you need (application, admission) and register as soon as it opens: seats go fast.

Retaking the exam

No mandatory waiting period between two sittings. Note: IRCC does not accept the IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Results and validity

On computer: usually 1 to 2 days (up to 5). On paper: 13 days.

The IELTS partners recommend a maximum of 2 years; IRCC requires results less than 2 years old.

Taking the exam online?

IELTS Online (from home) is Academic only and is not accepted for migration: for Canada, take the IELTS General Training at a centre.

On the day

  • Leave early: if you are late you may not be allowed to sit the test. source
  • Your belongings stay outside the room; phone and devices switched off. source
  • Not allowed: phone, electronic devices, keys, wallet, food, bags, watch. source
  • No photo needed: the centre takes your photo on test day. source
